What Are You Seeking?

Do you ever find yourself trying to get God's attention? Ever jump up and down saying, "See God, I did that well," as if looking for a reward? Maybe a promotion or that blessing you've been praying for? Ever look at someone else's life and wonder how they seem more favored by God than you? Are you reading countless books about how to get your life right and how to get closer to God? Then you aren't alone. Many fall into this category at some time or another, including myself, of trying to win God's blessings.

There's good news. We can't!

Thankfully, God did not create His/Her vision based on us and reward systems we create. There's no such thing as being the teacher's pet in the classroom of life. Now I, having been the teacher's pet throughout primary school, found this disturbing as I began to grow up spiritually. Internal thought: You mean God isn't going to like me more and favor me more just because I'm nice and quiet and mannerly and keep my appearance neat while everyone else is getting dirty and talk loudly in the world!?

Yes, God desires us to do "right" and to not fall into sin but this is for our wellbeing, our joy, not for some ego driven God. And scripture also says God isn't a respecter of persons. We're all on the same level playing field.

And God's blessings are abundant. Just because one person seems to have it all (and no one ever feels they themselves do) doesn't mean God has run out of "a good man/woman," or "the right job," or financial blessings. There are no limitations in the Mind of God -- only in ours. Blessings overflow to those who know they exist and are ready, in faith, to receive them.

Simply, we do not need to get God's attention. We already have it. We were born with it. God knows each of us and how many hairs we have on our head, just as She knows how many grans of sand there are. God created you. God created me. We are created in the Spirit's image and we were known before we were even conceived. So jumping up and down saying, "God, here I am" is an exercise in futility. I think, instead, God may be waiting for us to say, "God, here I am, use me." And if we feel like God isn't using us then we might want to ask ourselves:
  1. do we feel that way because our perception of what being used by God looks like is a little off base from what God actually has for us,
  2. have we sincerely done what God has already asked us to do,
  3. is our hidden desire to be seen than to have God be seen through us?

When we unblock the authentic image and experience of God, we realize we can truly rest in God's love covering us all like a mother's quilt. We can rest in God's unmerited favor. We could not win or earn it if we tried (and I know we do).

We will see the more we rest in and trust God's love for us all "just because," the more we want to be in God's presence. And the more we surrender our mind, heart, and spirit to God, the more God rejoices in and with us, and the more we experience life anew.

God's presence is all around us. Closer than air. And God sees us. Not from some high cloud judging our every move and plotting our punishment but as Love, Compassion and Companion during every second of life. The question is, "Are we seeking and seeing God?"

"Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things will be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33).

Goodness! I love life and giving back. Sometimes, however, I feel a little lost on the journey. Then, I remember that God's got this and I'm a conduit of His/Her purpose, love and grace. It shows up in my art, in my presentations and workshops, in my relationships. That's what I write about here -- this glorious, delicious, messy journey we are each called to embrace.
